Flight Data Services Holds User Group 13

22nd October 2010

22 October 2010 – Fareham, UK: Twice a year, Flight Data Services holds a User Group for its customers to share and discuss aviation safety issues, learn new safety related skills, and discover the latest developments in FDS safety technology.

The first User Group was held in 2004. On 19 - 21 October, FDS held its 13th User Group, at the Holiday Inn in Portsmouth.

The three-day event is divided into two parts, beginning with a training session for new customers followed by an interactive safety information exchange for the benefit of all customers, to which guest speakers are invited.

This year’s training included guidance from Simon Searle, FDS’s aviation safety consultant, on preparing for, conducting, and closing an investigative flight crew interview.

On day two, customers were presented with a number of case studies, focusing on data examination and investigative interviewing. Day three featured opening remarks by Dave Jesse, including insight into how FDS is growing its operation, building on its innovative flight safety technology. Chief Operating Officer David Barry, who recently joined FDS from bmi, provided insight into FDM processes, SMS and just cultures.

FDS’s new Flight Data Analysis Manager, Derek Murphy, shared his experiences as Accountable Manager with a national European airline.

A Confidential Forum followed, chaired by Anthony Barrett-Jolley, SMS Manager of Air Contractors. New safety issues were shared, including a B737 flight control issue that was subsequently circulated, as a courtesy, to FDS customers who operate this particular aircraft.

Chris Jesse and Martin Wimpress provided a demonstration of the new, enhanced features of the FDS customer website. With the release of the new POLARIS website, customers will be able to compare the number of flights analysed to the number of flights flown, view take-off and landing METAR weather reports and utilise built-in modern visualisation tools such as interactive graphs, cockpit displays and Google maps.

The next User Group is planned for spring 2011.

The Holiday Inn Portsmouth is a dockside walk from restaurants and shops at Gunwharf Quays, and minutes from Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Nearby places of interest include the Portsmouth Naval Base and Royal Naval HQ as well as BAE Systems and the VT Group. Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory, is a 20-minute walk from the hotel. The 170-metre high Spinnaker Tower and the Dickens Museum are less than a mile from the hotel. Nearby Old Portsmouth is perfect for relaxing strolls to seaside pubs.
