Mountain Air Cargo, Inc. contracts with Flight Data Services for their Flight Data Analysis

Flight Data Services (FDS) is delighted to announce that Mountain Air Cargo, Inc. has selected FDS as their Flight Data Analysis service provider.

Based in Denver, North Carolina, Mountain Air Cargo, Inc. is an express cargo carrier providing flight and maintenance services throughout the eastern half of the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean Islands. FDS will be providing Flight Data Analysis for Mountain Air Cargo’s ATR-42/72 aircraft.

Ken Ashby, Director of Safety of Mountain Air Cargo said:

The opportunity to work with FDS has been a pleasure. It is fundamental that all involved in FDM agree on the aims and objectives of the work and the self-imposed restrictions in which we operate. All aviation professionals accept the improvement of safety standards as a worthy goal but agreeing on the method of achieving it is more difficult. By fully sharing the objectives and concerns of all parties, the possibility of the misunderstandings about what FOQA will accomplish can be reduced.

Some operators may be under the mistaken impression that simply receiving a list of events once a month would constitute an acceptable FDM program. This is certainly not the case in my view – without the assessment and corrective action, such a system would deliver no real safety improvement and it is highly likely that such operators would find themselves assessed as ‘non-compliant’ when audited by their FAA CMT for FOQA compliance.

Flight Data Service’s knowledge and understanding of the safety issues I face in our airline, and how the FDM/FOQA program should work, has been refreshing. By increasing our reliance on two industry-led safety programs, the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP), and implementing the Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) program, which involves the collection and analysis of data recorded during flight to improve safety, will add immeasurably to our safety knowledge base. This empirical approach, coupled with the expertise and commitment of FDS provides the underpinning for MAC’s safety efforts.

I am looking forward to our business relationship and relieved that I now have an additional tool in my department which will contribute to the safety of our crews and will become the corner stone for our Flight OPS SMS program.

FDM Training Courses held in Portsmouth 18-20 January 2010

FDS Consulting held a Use of Flight Data to Support Engineering Investigations training course in Portsmouth on 18 January 2010. The course was developed specifically for Engineers who wanted to improve their knowledge of Flight Data Monitoring and how to use flight data in engineering investigations.

The training course for Engineers was followed by a two day Flight Data Monitoring training course on 19 and 20 January. This course included tuition and extensive exercises covering all aspects from data recording and analysis to event investigation and aircrew interviews.

The 11th FDS User Group Meeting Held in Norway

The 11th Flight Data Services (FDS) User Group Meeting was held at the Radisson SAS Airport Hotel in Oslo Norway on Wednesday 18th November 2009.

The meeting was hosted by FDS customer Norwegian Air Shuttle and as part of the meeting the delegates were given a tour of the Norwegian’s operational facilities visiting the hangar and terminal building.

In addition to presentations on FDS company and service developments, the meeting was addressed by guest speakers Mr Asgeir Nyseth, Accountable Manager of Norwegian Air Shuttle who gave a presentation on Norwegian’s milestones, Mr Kåre Halvorsen from Norwegian Accident Investigation Branch who explained how flight data is used in investigations and Hans Jørgen Bugge from Avinor who spoke about Integrated Runway Information System (IRIS).

FDS would like to thank Norwegian Air Shuttle and the guest speakers for their contribution to the meeting.

Flight Data Services Exhibits at the International Air Safety Seminar in Beijing

Flight Data Services (FDS) exhibited at the Flight Safety Foundation’s 62nd International Air Safety Seminar (IASS) in Beijing on 2-5 November 2009.

The IASS is held annually since 1947 in cities around the globe and enables the international aviation community to meet face to face for discussions on key safety issues. This year’s meeting focused on global safety review, worldwide perspectives, human factors challenges, investigation lessons learned, operational issues and safety management systems.

During the exhibition FDS ran a Business Card Prize Draw to win a Luxury Hamper. Mr Bill McCabe, a member of the Board of Governors of the Flight Safety Foundation, drew the winning business card. The lucky winner of the Hamper was Mr Tzvetomir Blajev from Eurocontrol.
