FDS is aiming towards a new goal in supporting more airlines in developing countries.

In particular we will be focusing on Africa through our membership of the African Air Safety Council (AFRASCO). Throughout the last 12 months we have made regular visits to attend safety events and meet with airlines. We plan to continue building relationships in this region with the aim of increasing awareness of aviation safety issues, making air travel in Africa safer, and ultimately saving lives.

We have provided support to AFRASCO by sponsoring the Secretary General’s salary, travel and accommodation when he attends meetings in Africa and also by creating and hosting their website. This is key for such a widely dispersed safety community who find it difficult to justify the cost of attending regular meetings.

To further improve the responsiveness of the POLARIS website, we have recently deployed Memcached, a widely adopted memory object caching system. Memcached improves the performance of our web applications by retrieving information from a fast, managed, in-memory caching system, instead of relying entirely on slower disk-based databases.

Additionally the page loading speeds have been improved by compressing many of the resources used by POLARIS and reducing the number of requests needed to fetch them from our servers.

There are many improvements to the POLARIS user interface, including:

- improved day-to-day user experience and adoption

- improved overall application behaviour

- attractive, user-friendly charts, graphs, maps and visualisations

- robust statistics reporting including fuel and engine trend data

- new features including a benchmarking tool that allows you to measure your safety

programme against other operators and take-off and landing weather information

- easy integration into your existing systems

We pride ourselves on being on the leading edge of flight data technology and continue to upgrade our products and services to meet future needs of our customers.

We have doubled our raw flight data processing capacity to meet the increasing demand for our services from new customers and expanding fleets of existing customers. We also designed and implemented a bespoke load balancing solution, specific to the needs of processing raw flight data to manage a cluster of any size. This makes it easier for us to add more processing capacity as required in the future to meet increasing customer demand.

The processing cluster not only affords us extra processing capability but also resilience. Should a processing node fail, the rest of the system will continue to operate normally.

This recent upgrade compliments the improvements we made earlier in 2011 when we upgraded the server hardware and introduced an advanced disk caching framework to ensure most of the input/ output intensive operations take place in RAM, which can quadruple the throughput of an individual node.

Flight Data Services (FDS), from its head office in the UK, offers a complete flight data management service to the commercial aviation industry. As a global leader in flight safety innovation, FDS recently delivered the first major advancement in flight data monitoring (FDM) for the decade—a flight data analysis tool designed specifically
for the Internet.

Since opening its doors for business in 2000, FDS has delivered tailored monitoring services to its global customers, setting up a U.S. business division in 2007 to support Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) requirements. Today, FDS monitors more than 800 aircraft worldwide. With well more than a million flights in its data archive, collected from more than 70 aircraft types, FDS is unique in providing benchmarking statistics across its customer base, benefiting both small and large fleet operators.

FDS also offers a consultancy service, designed to assist airlines in carrying out flight safety activities, providing everything from a simple gap audit to setting up a complete safety department.

With a premium, complete, and dedicated service that is accessible 24/7, FDS maintains the highest ratio of analysts per aircraft in the industry. The customer friendly analyst team includes professionals from many sectors of the industry—flight crew, navigation, engineering, dispatch, and air traffic control—offering specialized expertise and a full range of quality services.

Operators can choose from a full-service program that includes data transfer, data processing, and data validation or a hosted service, which is an ideal platform for operators that wish to maintain ownership of the data validation process.

The innovative Internet-based POLARIS program is an integrated, open-source solution that can be accessed from anywhere an Internet connection is available. There is no proprietary hardware or software to purchase,
learn, or maintain. POLARIS is a zerofootprint, cross platform solution that allows users to browse, investigate, and use statistics immediately upon set up.

Statistical reports can be exported to Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets, and Adobe PDF documents. Interactive dashboards allow users to interact with their data and perform investigations into trends. Builtin modern visualization tools include interactive graphs, cockpit displays, and Google maps. A built-in technical support function is also available.

For air safety investigators, the value of POLARIS lies in its simplicity of use, cost effectiveness, and accessibility—whether the user is in the office or working in the field.

FDS is initiating an online POLARIS community to further facilitate and promote knowledge sharing within the industry. Air safety professionals are invited and encouraged to contribute. A place for like-minded professionals to provide input, the POLARIS community ensures that contributions will be made accessible to the aviation safety world.

ISASI membership promises to be very beneficial to Flight Data Services in building a community relationship with flight safety specialists to develop best practices for sharing flight data analysis algorithms and lessons learned from past investigations.

Nick will focus on creating the best customer experience possible, through usability enhancements to ensure a friendly and intuitive interface. Nick’s appointment increases the company’s specialist IT team to nine.

“This role at FDS gives me the opportunity to apply my software engineering training and skill set”, Nick explained, “and I’m very much looking forward to working with FDS’s incredibly professional team and impressive client base.”

CEO Dave Jesse commented, “We are delighted to add Nick’s qualifications to our specialist POLARIS website development team. We have a very cohesive team here at FDS, and choose our staff very selectively. As well as having to demonstrate exceptional skills in software development, we look for people with the right attitude, who will enhance our working environment and, ultimately, the products and services we offer our clients.

11 March 2011 – Portsmouth, UK: Flight Data Services (FDS) has been selected as ‘Exporter of the Year’ at an awards dinner held this evening at the Portsmouth (UK) Guildhall. The distinction, awarded at The News’ Business Excellence Awards 2011 event, honours the very best businesses the region has to offer.

This is the third business award won by the innovative aviation safety company. In 2007, FDS took home the National/International Trade 2007 award as well as the Business of the Year 2007 honour presented by the local Borough Council of Gosport.

Flight Data Services, founded in 2000, now has offices in the USA and Dubai, in addition to its centre of excellence outside of Portsmouth in Fareham. The company exports 87 percent of its Flight Data Monitoring (FDM) services to 60 overseas aircraft operators worldwide, and tracks over 530 aircraft. This, together with attendance at eight international conferences, placed the company in a strong position for the award.

Commenting on the occasion, Dave Jesse, CEO said, “We are delighted to receive the award for Exporter of the Year. It is a fitting tribute to our skilled team of flight data analysts, software engineers and safety specialists who have worked hard to achieve world’s best status.”

01 March 2011 – Fareham, UK: Flight Data Services (FDS) has selected InetSoft’s Style Intelligence to provide its customers with custom interactive reporting.

Translating this raw data into operational business intelligence is an integral part of an aircraft operator’s safety program. Identifying trends and fully investigating circumstances behind minor incidents enables safety managers to improve operational procedures and training, raising awareness of safety issues within the operation and assisting management to make informed business decisions. Style Intelligence will allow FDS to provide its customers with a secure report portal from which they can instantly and interactively generate their own reports and drill down into data.

“We were very selective, having looked at about a dozen similar products. In the end, it was an easy choice because other offerings were unable to meet our fundamental requirements. We selected InetSoft on the basis that their product integrated well with our applications and business processes,” said Martin Wimpress, IT Manager at FDS.

“In addition, and unique amongst similar solutions, the InetSoft products provided static as well as dynamic reporting, enabling our customers to investigate their data against pre-determined measurables,” continued Wimpress. “This functionality provides our customers with a powerful benchmarking tool to determine how many similar events have occurred over an established period, and whether they are increasing or decreasing in regularity, effectively measuring their safety programme against past performance.”

Mark Flaherty, Chief Marketing Officer at InetSoft notes how well equipped Style Intelligence is to meet Flight Data Services’ specific needs: “Style Intelligence is designed to meet high performance demands using real-time data sources for hundreds or even thousands of simultaneous users. We’re pleased to be a central component of FDS’s safety maintenance solution for the aviation industry.”

Style Intelligence is a full-featured business intelligence solution that is 100% Java at the server level and HTML, JavaScript, and Flash at the client level, which combined with its SOA architecture and open standards-based technology, makes for an ideal embedding and integration-ready application for dashboards and visualization. End-users get visually compelling, highly interactive access to data, and solution providers get a highly customizable, quick to learn and quick to deploy business intelligence toolset and information delivery platform.

About Flight Data Services

Focusing on the advancement of aviation safety through the innovative use of flight data, FDS helps aircraft operators comply with stringent international civil aviation regulations and certification guidelines, maximize operational efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
